Playing the game

How do I play a crossword?

Every clue square points at its answer with a small arrow. A picture clue shows the answer, a word clue describes it, and some clues show a few letters already. You and a rival take turns on the same board: tap a square, then a letter from your rack, and tap Submit when your letters are down. Stuck? Tap Pass and the rival plays.

How does scoring work?

Each right letter scores 10. Right letters in a row add a streak bonus of up to 15, and every word you finish adds 20. A wrong letter costs 10.

How do I earn stars?

One star for solving, one for beating the rival, and one for a clean solve with no hints and no wrong letters. Replay a level any time to earn the stars you missed — and a better replay can raise your score.

What are hints and swaps?

A hint fills one square for you. Swap gives you new letters and keeps the tiles you've already placed. Early levels include free hints; after that, an optional short ad pays for one.

What is the Words mode?

A letter wheel: connect letters in any order to make the target words. It has its own 300 levels.

How many levels are there?

300 crossword levels, 300 Words levels and a new daily puzzle every day. We plan to add more.

Daily puzzle and streaks

When does the daily puzzle change?

At midnight on your phone's clock. Everyone gets the same board on the same day.

How do streaks and trophies work?

Solve the daily on consecutive days to build a streak. Each month's dailies fill a bronze, silver or gold trophy in Me › Awards.

Why is my shared daily missing its letters?

Today's daily is shared without its letters so friends can still solve it. From tomorrow it shares in full.

Progress, sign-in and leaderboard

Do I need an account?

No. You can play everything as a guest. Signing in with Google Play Games adds the leaderboard, achievements and a cloud copy of your progress.

How do I move my progress to a new phone?

Sign in with Google Play Games on your old phone and play a level so your progress saves. On the new phone, install the game and sign in with the same Google account. Without Play Games sign-in, progress stays on the old phone.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

By total crossword score: the sum of your best score on every crossword level. See All time or This week under Me › Leaderboard.

How do I change my leaderboard name or picture, or hide my profile?

They come from your Google Play Games profile. Change them, or set your profile visibility, in the Google Play Games app.

My score was removed from the leaderboard.

We remove scores that look impossible, for example from a modified app. If you think we got it wrong, email us.

Does the game work offline?

Yes. All puzzles are in the app. The leaderboard, cloud save and ads need an internet connection.

Ads and purchases

When do ads appear?

Between levels, never in the middle of a puzzle. Hint and swap ads play only when you choose to watch one.

What does Remove Ads do?

It's a one-time purchase that turns off the ads between levels for good on your Google account. Optional ads you choose to watch for a hint may still be offered.

I bought Remove Ads but I still see ads.

Make sure the phone's Play Store uses the Google account you bought it with, then reopen the game — purchases restore automatically. Still seeing them? Email us your order number (it starts with GPA.) from the Google Play receipt email.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Google Play. Request one at play.google.com or in Play Store › Profile › Payments & subscriptions › Budget & history.

How do I change my ad privacy choices?

In Me › Privacy preferences. If no choices are shown, none are needed where you live. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in Android settings.

Privacy and your data

What data does the game collect?

We run no servers and receive none of your game data. Google collects some data for ads, Play Games and purchases — see the Privacy Policy.

How do I delete my data?

See Delete your data.

Troubleshooting

The game crashed or froze.

Update to the latest version from Google Play and restart your phone. If it happens again, email us what you were doing when it crashed.

Which phones are supported?

Android 8.0 or newer.

I found a wrong or unsuitable clue.

Thank you — email the level number and the clue and we'll fix it in an update.
